Skin Tag Removal

Mandatory Medical Clearance

Please note, before booking an appointment for skin tag removal, it is mandatory to have your skin tags checked by your family doctor to rule out any medical concerns.

You will be required to fill out and sign a consent form confirming that:

  • Your skin tag(s) have been assessed by a physician.
  • Your doctor has no concerns regarding removal.

We will not proceed without this confirmation, as your safety is our priority.

How Do We Remove Skin Tags?

At our clinic, skin tag removal is performed using two safe and effective methods:

  • Electrocautery (Direct Current): A fine electric current is used to gently burn and remove the skin tag at its base.
  • Laser Removal: A precise laser beam targets the skin tag, removing it with minimal damage to the surrounding skin.

Your practitioner will assess your skin tag and recommend the most suitable method based on its size, location, and your skin type.

What Is Electrocautery?

Electrocautery is a common method used in medical aesthetics to remove skin tags. A fine electric current passes through a heated wire to carefully burn and detach the skin tag from the skin. The heat also helps prevent bleeding and promotes faster healing.

Is Scarring Possible?

In most cases, there is little to no scarring after skin tag removal. However, as with any skin procedure, we cannot guarantee scar-free results. Scarring risk may depend on:

  • Our skin type
  • Size and location of the skin tag
  • Your skin’s natural healing process
  • Aftercare compliance
Why Do Skin Tags Appear?

Skin tags are very common and may develop due to:

  • Friction: Skin rubbing against skin or clothing
  • Genetics: Family history of skin tags
  • Hormonal changes: Pregnancy or hormonal imbalance
  • Age: More common in middle-aged and older adults
  • Weight: More common in individuals who are overweight
  • Certain medical conditions: Such as insulin resistance or diabetes

They are benign and not harmful, but many people choose to remove them for cosmetic reasons or due to irritation.

Possible Risks & Side Effects

While skin tag removal is generally safe and well-tolerated, some risks may include:

  • Mild redness or swelling at the treated area
  • Temporary skin sensitivity or discomfort
  • Scabbing or crusting during healing
  • Pigment changes (temporary or permanent)
  • Scar formation (in rare cases)
  • Infection (very rare, if aftercare is not followed)

Who Is a Good Candidate for Skin Tag Removal?

You may be a good candidate for Skin Tag Removal if:

  • You have one or multiple skin tags that are bothersome, irritating, or affecting your confidence.
  • Your skin tags are located in common areas such as the neck, underarms, eyelids, chest, or groin.
  • Your skin tags are benign (non-cancerous) and have been assessed by a professional if necessary.
  • You are in good overall health and have no active skin infections in the treatment area.
  • You are seeking a quick, safe, and effective way to remove skin tags for cosmetic or comfort reasons.
  • You understand that removal is typically a simple, non-invasive procedure with minimal downtime.

Who Is Not a Good Candidate for Skin Tag Removal?

You may not be a suitable candidate for skin tag removal if:

  • You have active skin infections, irritation, or open wounds in the treatment area.
  • Your skin tags are suspicious, irregular in shape, color, or rapidly changing — these should first be evaluated by a dermatologist.
  • You have a history of keloid scarring or poor wound healing.
  • You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding (removal is safe, but may be postponed unless medically necessary).
  • You have certain medical conditions affecting blood clotting or immunity without prior medical clearance.
  • You are unable or unwilling to follow aftercare instructions, including avoiding sun exposure or irritation of the treated area.

Pre-Treatment Care for Skin Tag Removal

To prepare for your skin tag removal appointment, please follow these guidelines:

  • Make sure the treatment area is clean and free of makeup, lotions, or creams.
  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning on the area for at least 1 week prior to treatment.
  • Do not apply any retinol, glycolic acid, or other exfoliating products to the area for 5 days before treatment.
  • Inform your practitioner if you have a history of keloid scarring, active skin infections, or any underlying medical conditions.
  • Avoid taking blood-thinning medications (such as aspirin) a few days prior, if advised by your healthcare provider.
  • Ensure your skin is not irritated, sunburned, or broken on the day of your appointment.

Post-Treatment Care for Skin Tag Removal

After your skin tag removal, follow these aftercare instructions to promote proper healing:

  • Keep the treated area clean and dry for the first 24 hours.
  • Apply a gentle, soothing ointment (such as Polysporin) as directed to protect the area.
  • Avoid touching, scratching, or picking the treated area.
  • Do not expose the treated area to direct sunlight; use sunscreen daily until the area has fully healed.
  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, swimming, or heavy exercise for 48 hours after treatment.
  • Allow any scabbing or crusting to fall off naturally — do not peel.
  • If redness, swelling, or discomfort persists beyond a few days, contact your practitioner.

Most treated areas will heal within 7–14 days, depending on the size and location of the skin tag.
